Saddle Bag supports needed???

I am looking to add some saddle bags to my 2002 savage for a couple road trips. I see a serious disadvantage to a tank bag with the speedometer on the tank. I have been looking at saddleman thrown over bags for the back seat.

My question really is do I need to buy the saddle bag supports to run with the throw-overs on the savage? I don't plan on leaving them on all the time, so I am looking for a quick cheep way to hold some clothes and such for a weekend trip (and carry a passenger.)
